AFTER THE Dez Bryant - Jeff Ireland matter did the rounds in the football world on Wednesday, the matter has become the topic of discussion on several sports networks, with everyone from Charles Barkley to Matt Milen giving their persepective on how big the issue is, how well it was dealt by Dez Bryant, how much damage was dealt to Miami Dolphins and what should happen to Jeff Ireland.
Though the actual judge and jury on the matter, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are still out on what happened and how it should be dealt with, Charles Barkley from NBA and former Lions GM Matt Milen had their own comments on the story. While Charles Barkley called Dez Bryant his favorite player for maintaining composure at the incident, Matt Millen, fresh of the 'Polack' controversy, said it wasn't such a big deal.
Matt Millen delivered his take on the issue on ESPN saying, "We're making a big deal out of something that's probably not that big a deal." Millen stated that in a pre draft interview, "there are no questions that are out of bounds" because, on a football field, "there are no questions that are out of bounds." He said that Ireland probably wanted to find out how Bryant would deal with such a situation.
On the other hand, Charles Barkley from NBA, had been in an interview with Dan Lebatard on Miami's WQAM-AM on Wednesday, when he was asked for his comments on the issue. He said, “I’ve got to go out and get me a Dez Bryant jersey. I’m serious. That kid, for him to hold his composure, he’s my new favorite player." He felt that any other player than the draft pick would have easily delivered at least a punch to Jeff Ireland over the comment.
When he was asked what should become of Jeff Ireland, he diplomatically stated that the matter was left to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. He added, “I think they should say something that it was inappropriate...It was stupid, it was uncalled for, in no situation is it acceptable. An apology is what you can do, but...I’m not going to go off on no tangent about this guy’s got to be fired."
During the draft 2010, Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland had asked Dez Bryant, "Is your mother a prostitute?" The question was rude, offensive and could easily earn Ireland a probation and even a financial penalty. Though the motive behind it could be important, yet many have asked why the query was raised in the first place, even after Ireland apologised for it.
