MARYLAND'S MEN'S lacrosse coach Dave Cottle resigned after completing nine seasons with the Terrapins. From what was believed to be the easiest way to the finals of the tournament, Maryland faltered badly in the quarterfinals and took everyone by shock. The team was eliminated in the NCAA men's lacrosse quarterfinals on Saturday with a 7-5 loss against unseeded Notre Dame. The terps were seeded number 3.
The Fighting Irish (9-6) took a 5-1 lead with 8:36 remaining in the first half. Maryland (12-4) got goals from Jake Bernhardt and John Haus that helped them bring the deficit to 5-3 at halftime. But Notre Dame extended its lead on goals from sophomore Sean Rogers and senior Grant Krebs.
Under coach Dave Cottle, Maryland have made eight NCAA tournament three Final Four appearances in 2003, 2005 and 2006 . This season's seniors were one of only two senior classes at Maryland not to participate in a Final Four since the NCAA tournament began in 1971.
Cottle who replaced former Maryland head coach Dick Edell in September of 2001, is one of the sports all-time winningest coaches.
