THIS COULD happen only in Gurgaon, where the law and order situation is going down the abyss every passing day. In a stunning incident, which reveals the callous attitude of the Gurgaon police, three alleged thieves caught red handed, while stealing from the premises of a private company in Palam Vihar, Gurgaon made good their escape, while the police officials at the newly built police station squabbled over the timing of the crime.
The incident happened on May 13, when two security guards provided by Walson Securitas, a big firm in security business, were caught red handed while handing over stolen goods to two youth. They were caught by security personnel belonging to 24-Guarding Private Limited, which takes care of security of the Ansal Triangle and Palam Vihar.
Identified as Jitender Tiwari and Rakesh Verma, the two security guards of Walson Securitas were caught in the morning with valuable equipment including laptops, computer hard disks, one projector and number of related things.
Immediately after being caught, the local police was called in and a police rider in Gypsy number 23 (As can be seen in the picture) came promptly and took hold of the accused. They were questioned and later taken to the police station where the real drama took place as a dispute arose among the police officials regarding the timing of the incident.
After listening to the entire episode from the police rider, the official on duty Head Constable Sahdev ruled that the incident had happened during the night and as such the complaint will be filed by duty officer Head Constable Mahender, who was there during the night.
When the rider took the culprits to Head Constable Mahender, he refused to register the complaint saying that there was no information from the Rider regarding the incident. He let loose a veritable blast and forced the Rider to go back to Head Constable Sahdev, who meanwhile was in no mood to entertain the complaint, despite the fact that the thieves, the buyers of stolen goods were already caught and no hard work was needed to be done in this case.
Even as the company officials kept on pleading with both the cops, they were told in no uncertain terms that the the decision would be taken by the Station House Officer, who was not present and will come later.
After a virtual confrontation between the two police officials, Mahender ultimately relented and took hold of the accused. All three of the them were questioned by him and their mobile phones and personal belongings were taken away after frisking them.
However, the matter did not end here as Mahender, who was in no mood to register the complaint met the Station House Officer, Rajender Singh, who looked to be a man in hurry and busy with his assignments as most of the key police officials are.
It seems that Mahender managed to get instructions that the complaint will be registered by Sahdev, who remained relentless in his stand that the incident happened during the night and same should be taken up by cops on night duty.
There was almost a virtual tiff between the two cops and Mahender even talked rashly with the company officials, who though had gone to register a complaint with the Gurgaon police were made to feel as if they were themselves the culprits.
With SHO Rajender Singh gone, the complaint remained in the limbo for more than 4 hours and the accused roamed free in the police station as no one was ready to acknowledge even their presence.
The company officials then decided to talk to another senior official at the police station, who also tried to mediate between the two cops but like India and Pakistan, both Mahender and Sahdev were intransigent.
Nothing seemed to move them and it appeared that this attitude might be due to some other consideration or influence. The cops then said that the matter would be resolved by the Station House Officer, who will come after 2 hours and asked them to come again later.
This, however, proved to be a major undoing as the officials left with the belief that the complaint would be registered later. However, this perhaps was a ruse to send the complainants away from the police station in order to ensure that the alleged culprits made good their escape.
As soon as the company officials returned, they were shocked that the three thieves they had handed over to the police station officials were nowhere to be seen. When this was inquired from the police officials they immediately washed their hands off the entire issue and said that they did not know where the trio had gone.
However, the officials told that the SHO had now appointed another official named ASI Satyavan as the investigating officer and he would look into the case. When the company officials met him, Satyavan asked them about the addresses of the culprits and threw his hands up when told that trio had escaped from the police station.
He then talked to Head Constable Mahender, who refused to admit that he had been handed over the three accused by the rider. However, when confronted by company officials, he said that he did not know where the accused were and even said that he did not know, who gave the culprits the mobiles back to them and allowed them to escape from the police station.
ASI Satyavan now told the company officials that it would be almost impossible to get hold of the thieves as there was no address with them. He almost refused to register the complaint, but when told firmly that an FIR needs to be registered, agreed to do so with much dilly dallying.
Another reason for this dilly dallying could be that officials of Walson Securitas, which included a retired Dy SP had already met with the police officials.
The attitude of the police officials caused so much consternation to the company officials that they decided to leave the matter there and returned without filing the complaint as it became apparent that police officials were not interested in taking action.
The harassed company officials, who had been requesting the police since morning 7 am realised that it was almost impossible to get the FIR registered and that they had been making a futile attempt. They simply told the cops that if they wanted to investigate the case they could take it otherwise there was no point in arguing with them.
It was after a considerable time after coming back from the police station, suddenly two officials ASI Satyavan and Head Constable Sahdev came to the office of the company, where the incident took place.
They now agreed to register the complaint. The police officials got a complaint written on a white sheet of paper and they took it away promising to look into the matter that had already been botched by them, knowingly or unknowingly.
However, nothing has been heard from the police officials since they registered the complaint, which it seems has been confined to a dustbin.
