Atwal creates history, wins USPGA title

INDIAN GOLFER, Arjun Atwal created history by winning Wyndham Championship, part of USPGA Tour on Sunday.

With Sunday’s historic win, Atwal became the first Indian to do so and also first qualifier since 1986 to win the prestigious championship after Fred Wadsworth. In the grand finale, the Indian golfer conquered American, David Toms.

In the past,  Atwal had won many prestigious championships on the European, Asian and National tours, however never tasted the crown at the PGA Tour until Sunday. To trounce his nearest rival, Atwal required a par on the closing hole as he entered the Sunday’s round with three-shot lead in his kitty. Atwal played consciously and cautiously and finished with 20-under-par 260 to lead the table.

Atwal was forced into qualifying sessions as he failed to win enough money and retain his medical exemption beyond eight events this season and eventually lost his tour card. With this milestone win, Atwal now has been assured of two-year berth on the PGA tour, virtually giving impetus to his career.

Asansol, West Bengal born, 37 year old Atwal began his golf career during his school days. In the year 1995, he turned professional. Ever since turning professional, Atwal has created flutter in the international golf circuit for the country. He is only the second Indian to earn the coveted membership of European Tour; Jeev Milkha Singh was the first Indian to do so.

Atwal has three European tour wins to his name—Caltex Singapore Masters (2002), Carlsberg Malaysian Open (2003) and Maybank Malaysian Open (2008. His performance in the Asian Tour is amazing, he has seven wins to his name, these include Wills Indian Open (1999), Hero Honda Masters (2000) and Caltex Singapore Masters (2002).

Lets hope riding on his historic win, Atwal will bring many more laurels for the country in the days to come. In a country marred with corruption, people like Atwal are setting example for others; if you have it in you no object has the power to impede your success.
