Are you in favour of reforms in IIT entrance examinations?

UNION HUMAN Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal is making news once again. Now, Sibal has said that marks obtained by a student in Class 12 for IIT entrance along with an aptitude test would decide admissions into Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and other engineering colleges. But the directors of the seven IITs’ of the country feel that the existing system of examination should be continued with the marks in Class XII and aptitude test.

Kapil Sibal is interested in renovation of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) entrance examination ie, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to discourage the coaching institutes, as he feels it is harming quality intake and other problem is that children appearing for multiple entrance examinations, which causes financial and psychological pressure on the children and their family. But the coaching produces results which are not only desirable, but an absolute necessity in today's environment; it is need of hour for students.

Question is that are you in favour of reforms in IIT entrance examination’s system? Earlier Minister talked about raising the required minimum of 60 per cent marks to at least 80 per cent in Class 12 for IIT entrance examinations. Why Union Minister is dragging country’s prestigious institutes in their reforming extravaganza? Why he is not ready to keep away IIT entrance examination from All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and all state levels engineering examinations? Idea of introducing marks obtained by a student in Class 12 and aptitude test for AIEEE, other engineering examinations is welcomed but he should not include IIT entrance examination in it for the shake of country’s pride.

He should see the education system at school level and know the fact that why in India students need coaching from coaching centres for the preparation of competitive examinations for science or arts subjects? First he should reform the education system so that students are able to appear in competitive examinations without any help from coaching centres. This will also help underprivileged students of society.

In my view, there is nothing wrong in the present IIT entrance examination system. They have special method to assess the students through examinations and their renowned professors’ draft difficult, tricky examination papers so that only bright students can solve it. Institutions try to grab the most intelligent students to maintain the standard of the institute and also maintain the institutes’ prestige in the process. I am in favour of reformation in higher and primary education where education itself has become profitable business. Quality is lost in the increase of quantity of professional institutions with quota system and politicisation but I still consider that existing system of IIT entrance examination is enough and best way of selecting students in the prestigious institute.
