THE INDIAN archery recurve team that comprised Jayanta Talukdar, Tarundeep Rai and Rahul Banerjee won a gold medal in Shanghai. The Indian archers defeated Japan at the Archery World Cup Stage IV on Saturday.
The Indian trio beat the Japanese team comprising Ryota Amano, Takaharu Furukawa, Hidekl Kikuchi 224-220 to finish on top. India went on to lead by 57-54 during the first end and continued to surge with 113-108 in the second leg.
Although Japan had put up a good show during the third end, the scores stood at 56-55 and both teams finished ties at 56-56 during the last leg. However, it was Indian team, which managed to click and take home the gold medal. The same team had earlier lost to USA during the World Cup Stage III at Ogden. India had lost the quarterfinals to USA.
During the fourth stage, India's first competitor was Great Britain, which is regarded as a strong opponent as it is also one of the most favoured teams in the Commonwealth Games. India won the game by clinching a 218-215 victory.
During the present leg of the tournament, India defeated USA by 225-208 and avenged their loss during the third edition of the World Cup held in Ogden.
Japan made a surprising entry into the finals after they chocked world champions Korea by 224-216.
