ARGENTINA's SENSATIONAL striker Lionel Messi has won the coveted Golden Boot Award this year. Messi being the top scorer last year in Europe’s domestic league was declared the winner of the coveted award.
In a ceremony held in the Spanish city, Barcelona on Thursday, Messi was honoured with the Golden Boot award.
The 23-year old striker played for Barcelona in the prestigious La Liga European Soccer Championship. Messi scored 34 goals in the last season. The two other players in the race for the coveted award were Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Udinese's Antonio Di Natale. However both these players were left far behind by Messi’s scintillating last season. Both these players found net 29 times in comparison to Messi’s 34, a clear margin of 05 goals.
Messi follows the footprints of another great striker Brazilian Ronaldo, who won the Golden Boot Award while playing for Barcelona in the year 1996-97.
By winning the Golden Boot Award, Messi has etched his name in the annals of soccer history as he is only the fourth player to have won three coveted awards viz, the Golden Boot, FIFA Player of the Year and the Golden Ball. The other three are Marco van Basten, Ronaldo and Cristiano Ronaldo.
