The first humanoid is all set for space journey

SPACE IS going to have its first humanoid called Robonaut 2 or R2 with its journey to the International Space Station this week during the final flight of space shuttle Discovery.

R2 is a mechanical and electrical robot that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hopes one day will assist astronauts in orbit in many tasks to make their work in space convenient.

Fact file:

Cost: 2. 5 million dollar Height: Three feet four inches Has no legs Made of aluminum and nickel-plated carbon fiber Created by collaborative efforts of NASA and General Motors Can perform space station cleaning duties Can spend hours outside in the extreme heat and cold Can carry and hold tools for spacewalking astronauts Can handle emergencies like toxic leaks or fires

It is said that in future Robonauts will be able to scout asteroids, Mars and other celestial bodies paving the way for humans to plan to go to deep space.

"While it might be just a single step for this robot, it is really a giant leap forward for the mankind," said Rob Ambrose, acting chief of Johnson Space Center's automation, robotics and simulation division in Houston.
