Five days CBI custody for A Raja, former associates

TELECOM MINISTER A Raja and his cohorts will remain in the CBI custody for the next five days. The Special CBI Court of O P Saini on Thursday remanded Raja, his private secretary R K Chandolia and former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura to five days custody of the investigating agency.

Raja and his close aides were produced before the Special CBI Court around 2 pm today at the Patiala House Court. The former Telecom Minister was allowed to discuss the matter with his counsel, when he was produced in the Special CBI Court by the Special Judge.

Raja and his former associates have been accused of circumventing the procedures laid down by law while granting the lucarative 2G licences and spectrum to the telecom companies. This according to the CAG report caused a loss of thousand of crores to the exchequer and the same has been made the basis of the FIR filed by the CBI.

CBI has alleged that the former minister and his associates colluded with telecom companies and abused their official position in order to benefit certain private parties at the cost of the state. CBI has mentioned actions such as arbitrary introduction of first-come-first serve principle, advancing the cut-off dates, asking for deposits withing a week and similar such moves that smacked of favouritism and corruption.

The 47-year old MP was arrested on Wednesday after being put to sustained questioning at CBI Headquarter in New Delhi.
