DOC RIVERS said on Wednesday to return to the bench as the Boston Celtics head coach for next season. Doc Rivers said in a text message, "I'm coming back. I want another crack at it with this group." Rivers, guided the Boston Celtics to the 2010 NBA Finals and led the franchise to its 17th NBA championship in 2008. It had been rumored that Rivers would leave the last year of his contract (and $5 million) on the table, in order to spend more time with his family. According to the reports, Doc Rivers is expected to get more time off this season to watch his sons play basketball and his daughter play volleyball. His youngest son, Austin, who is a blue-chip prospect entering his senior year of high school. Rivers, who finished his sixth season with the Celtics, has one more year remaining on his contract. The Boston Celtics went 50-32 last season, won the Atlantic Division then knocked off Miami. Rivers, who won the 2000 NBA Coach of the Year award in Orlando, since taking the responsibility of coaching of the Boston Celtics in 2004, the 48-year-old has gone 280-212 in the regular season and compiled a 38-26 postseason mark with an NBA title in 2008.
