IN A move that can bolster India's education scenario, the Centre gave its nod to set up its campuses and study centres abroad. The decision taken by the Human Resources Development ministry on Wednesday comes as one of its slew decisions so as to give wider autonomy to the premiere business schools.
The government had previously hinted that it may allow Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to set up its centres once the quality of its faculty improvises.
As of now, the IIM's are facing serious faculty shortage. The approved faculty to student ratio is 1:9, the ratio is 1:11 at IIM, Ahmedabad, 1:13.4 at IIM Bangalore and 1:15 at IIM, Kozhikode.
A proposal by IIM-Bangalore was sent to the ministry to open its campus in Singapore which was subsequently turned down.
The reason stated by the ministry was that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of IIM-Bangalore did not qualify it to open a campus in Singapore.
At a press conference after the decision was made public, an IIM director told media persons that they have been thinking about going international but there is nothing on the table as of now.
However, this opens the door for the IIMs to do so and there are various ways of going international, not only through an MBA. The statement was made soon after the directors of the IIM's met HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.
