Lady police officer assaults lawyer in Berhampur


IN YET another incident highlighting the growing police excesses in Berhampur city of Orissa, a lady police officer allegedly assaulted a lawyer on road when latter asked her why she was beating a man on the road on Thursday (21 Oct, 2010).


As per the allegation levelled by the lawyer, Janak Kumar Moharana, he was having tea at a shop along Aska Road in the city on Thursday, when the lady officer Chandramani Singh of Bada Bazaar police station came on a motor cycle and physically assaulted the man.


When the lawyer intervened and questioned the officer behind such an act his efforts were thwarted and he was asked to get aside instead. As a samaritan, when Janak revealed his identity he was beaten up as well for his intervention with a PVC pipe.


Unprepared for the attack from the officer, Janak later told the media that he was assaulted on his left elbow and leg while the other man was directed to report in the police station.


Later, Janak went to a local hospital and after getting treatment, had intimated the incident to the Ganjam Bar Association members in written letter on Thursday. The letter was followed by an agitation led by the lawyers against the police officer.


Notably, police excesses are increasing day by day in Berhampur city. Earlier, the town police along with the women police station staff had implicated a practicing lawyer and had sent him to the jail at 1 am.


Meanwhile, in another case, Berhampur town police assaulted lawyers on the road when a mob of few hundred people were gheraoing the town police station to protest lathi charge on the public in which even children and women, taking food on road side kiosks, were not spared.
