INDIAN PREMIER League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi’s lawyer has written a letter to the Regional Passport Officer meting out clarifications as well as asking for more time to react on the show cause notice sent to Modi earlier.
"We should be given sufficient time to react to the issued notice. We want more time and clarification from the Regional Passport Officer. We have sent a reminder to the passport office,” said Modi's lawyer Abdi, while addressing the media persons.
Earlier in the month, on October 13, Modi was issued the aforementioned show cause notice asking to give clarifications as to why his passport should not be revoked. This came as a follow-up to, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao’s threat to Modi that she cancel his passport if he does not give proper response to the corruption charges.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which looks into foreign exchange violations, has been on toes to nail some response from former IPL Commissioner, whereas he has been out of the country refusing to face ED investigations. The charges include corruption and violation of foreign exchange management Act (FEMA) related to the IPL.
The ED then in turn wrote to the External Affairs Ministry asking to revoke Modi’s passport due to his refusal to face the charges.
Another showcause notice was given to Modi in May, this year, by the the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) charging him with financial irregularities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament.
