THE DAUGHTER in Law or ‘bahu’ factor combined with the tireless efforts of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) chief Dr Rita Bahuguna Joshi made the Thursday (November 25) rally of Congress president Sonia Gandhi an overwhelming success in Allahabad, the city of India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. Allahabad opened the doors of its heart to its ‘bahu’ Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Thousands thronged to her rally as never before in Uttar Pradesh. The city was upbeat and even students bunked classes to catch a glimpse of Sonia Gandhi.
The tireless efforts of UPCC chief Dr Rita Joshi, who camped in Allahabad for several days before the event, also produced visible results, her single-handed management of the event left no scope for doubt that the rally would be a success.
Gandhi began her speech by invoking the ‘Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb’ of the city and talking of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Moti Lal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru and how Allahabad had given four prime ministers to the country in the past. She was addressing a public rally on the KP College grounds to mark the 125 years of the party. Prominent among those present with her were All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh, state president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and CLP leader Pramod Tiwari.
Gandhi challenged the opposition parties to take steps against corruption and attacked the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh where ‘corruption has spread right from bottom to the top inside the system’. Gandhi said: “Congressmen know that corruption comes in the way of development and corruption would not be tolerated in any way. Instead of adopting double standards on the issue, the Opposition should come forward and take stern and effective steps like the United Progress Alliance has done. ”
She said that the UPA government had given several thousand crores to Uttar Pradesh, but complaints continue to pour in about poor electricity, road and water supply. “There is no law and order and people are not safe here,” she said.
Sonia Gandhi called upon party workers to ensure that benefits and awareness of the Central schemes spread far and wide so that ‘there is no scope left for corruption’.
“We know that the path of truth is difficult but we Congressmen would continue to follow it,” she added.
