Srinagar worst victim of NC exploitation: Mehbooba

PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC Party president Mehbooba Mufti has said even as the entire state has been at the receiving end of the National Conference politics of betrayal, exploitation and deceit Srinagar has been its worst victim.

Addressing a meeting of the office bearers and prominent workers of the Srinagar unit of the party here today which was also addressed by District President Srinagar Mohd Ashraf Mir, Senior Leader Ab Hameed Kosheen and Asiea Naqash, PDP President said NC had time and again been exploiting the people of Srinagar for its political survival but has always taken the capital city for granted. “That is why even while being one of the most prominent historical cities of the world, Srinagar ranks perhaps the lowest in development index” she maintained.

Mehbooba said though the capital city has the potential of becoming heritage tourism capital of South Asia, given its rich and diverse cultural past, NCs exploitation and neglect of Srinagar has led it to be declared as one of the most threatened 100 heritage sites of the world.

It is indeed a shame that in spite of claiming to represent the city politically for decades, the NC has failed even in providing basic amenities to its population. On the other hand worst kind of repression has been let loose on the people of the city with its youth facing major brunt.

Hundreds of them have been arrested, including some government employees, while numerous others have been forced underground she said and regretted that even houses were not being spared. She said the security forces were taking a sadistic pleasure out of damaging residential houses particularly in Srinagar so that the inmates are exposed to extreme cold and punished in a manner that is not reported in press.

Referring to the acute unemployment problem facing the youth of Srinagar, Mehbooba said even though their counterparts in rural areas too were finding it difficult to get jobs, the plight of urban youth is a cause of greater concern as they don’t have even the option of working in agriculture fields. Instead of attending to this grave crisis the NC led government is adopting more and more draconian methods to crush people’s voice against injustice which has united the urban and rural population in their current struggle.

She said the recent directions of the High Court on engagement of 43000 casual labourers have confirmed the worst fears that the coalition government was out to sell these jobs in the old NC tradition. It was sad and depressing that Omar Abdullah government had like all other positive measures taken by the previous government reversed the transparency in recruitment as well, she pointed out.
