WEST BENGAL witnessed another strange case of lawlessness and anarchy in the name of organising pujas as a group of men (read rogues) mercilessly beat up none other than an Additional Superintendent of Police. The bizarre incident took place on Sunday morning at Ramchandrapur, a place in Midnapore district. The incident came into light after the officer was rescued and spoke in front of the media.
According to the witnesses and also the victim, the Additional SP of Haldia, Niladri Chakraborty was beaten up by a gang while the former resisted them from forcibly collecting chandas (subscription) of the Saraswati Puja from people on the highway. Not only had the goons beaten up the officer, but also locked him into a desolate clubhouse for 30 minutes. It was after 30 minutes his bodyguards rescued him from the clubhouse and sent him to a nearby hospital.
Chakraborty, while was on his way to the Salt Lake stadium on special duty for the day’s most attractive Mohun Bagan-East Bengal football match, was stuck in a traffic jam on the Mechada-Haldia highway at about 7.35 am. As he found that the Chanda was being collected forcibly from the motorists there, he got out of his car and resisted the goons.
But they hardly cared the warnings of the officer and caught him by his collar, beat him up and dragged him off the road. When the guards rescued him from the locked clubhouse, Chakraborty was found bleeding in nose. He also received head injuries.
While speaking to the media, Ajit Sarkar, the SP of the East Midnapore said, “Chakraborty came across men collecting subscriptions and holding up traffic. He took action but was beaten up. We are investigating”.
