THE NEW Jan Lokpal Bill would not be able to suspend corrupt judges and ministers. This is the latest news coming out after the first rounds of talks got over in the North block in New Delhi between the members of civil society represented by Anna Hazare and the members of government headed by Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee looking after the proposed clauses to be put in the draft of Lokpal Bill, which will be put before the Parliament in the Monsoon session.
Now if the Lokpal will not be able to nail down corrupt judges and ministers, then for what are we fighting for? If the Lokpal is going to exercise its powers only on clerks and class two employees, then what are legal luminaries like Shanti Bhushan, Prashant Bhushan and Santosh Hegde doing in the panel?
The next round of talks will be held on May 2.
The environment around the talks have already been vitiated. There are news reports mentioning how Shanti Bhushan was linked with some politicians in a CD containing audio recording. Then there's another news item regarding Anna Hazare spending two lakh on his birthday bash in his village, after taking the same amount from his trust long time ago. For this Anna Hazare had duly apologized to the judge. It seems there's been some turnaround in the approach of the two sides.
The civil society seems to have gone on the defensive, whereas the government it seems has wrested the initiative.
This shift was visible and could be seen in the talks where members of civil society readily agreed on dropping ministers and judges from the purview of Lokpal.
Actually, frankly speaking, we really don’t want corruption to go because it paves the way to luxury, and the words simplicity, ethics, moral and honesty look good only in a lexicon.
The fate of Lokpal bill is looking quite clear to me as Anna Hazare and his team went on their knees before the government in the very first round. So its better we should go back to work, and live life as we used to live by giving ‘suvidha shulk’ in each government department in order to get our work done smoothly to our utmost satisfaction.
