Derrick Brooks, Ex-Buccaneers announces retirement from NFL


DERRICK BROOKS, former Tampa Bay Bucs linebacker has announced his retirement from the NFL today. Derrick Brooks announced his retirement via his website. Brooks spent his complete 14-year NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Derrick Brooks is expected to hold a news conference at One Buccaneer Place on Thursday afternoon about his retirement. He is preparing for his second year on ESPN as an NFL analyst.

He hasn't played in the NFL since being released by the Tampa Bay Bucs following the 2008 season. Brooks will be eligible for Hall of Fame balloting in 2014.

Brooks, 37, was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2002 and helped lead the Buccaneers to their first and only Super Bowl championship following the 2002 season over Oakland. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 28th overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft.

Derrick Brooks was an 11-time Pro Bowler, had an amazing 14-year career and never missed a game, starting all but the first three of his team-record 224 games. He finished with 2,198 tackles, the most in team history. Brooks recorded 100 or more tackles for 13 straight seasons from 1996-2008.
