Facebook helps Delhi police to catch traffic offenders

TECHNOLOGY COULD not get any better than this with social networking site Facebook helping the traffic police in Delhi. What can be termed as a classic case of police ingenuity, the Delhi police has started a campaign on the popular networking site to curb the menace of growing traffic offenders. The fan page developed by Delhi Police already has more than 18,000 fans, who with their brilliant ideas have helped the officers in getting hold of the offenders.

The fans upload an image that justifies the degree of the crime like riding motorbikes without helmet, jumping traffic signals, ignoring cross overs and steering into bicycle and bus lanes to find an open passage. As of now, there are only 5,000 traffic officials, who manage a population of 12 million strong people. The Facebook fan page has helped the officials in issuing 665 tickets using the license plates which are shown in the photographs.

The response from the masses has been overwhelmingly positive although concerns regarding the privacy and authenticity of the photographs have been raised. Looking back at the response, Delhi's joint commissioner of traffic, Satyendra Garg said that there was a possibility that the photographs could be tampered  to incriminate an innocent person. In such a case, the driver can challenge the ticket if they did not break the law. The police has however urged the citizens not to let personal animosity influence the photo clicking.
