Himachal CM assures Lahaul Spitti residents of flood relief


ON SATURDAY, a deputation from the remote Lahaul Spitti area of Himachal Pradesh led by Dr. Ram Lal Markandey, MLA,  called on Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal at his Shimla office  to apprise him of various problems of the area, especially those caused by incessant rains in the valley. Dr. Ram Lal Markandey, MLA, Lahaul and Spiti, gave the latest position in the tribal district where heavy losses had been reported from different parts of Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

 

Dr Ram Lal thanked the Chief Minister for providing Rs. 2 crore as flood relief to the District and requested him to get the relocation case of Giu village settled on priority to protect the villagers against any future incidents.

 

 

During the interaction with the delegation, Chief Minister assured that the Himachal Government will find out all possibilities to relocate the traditional tribal village Giu of Spiti Valley at safe location which had been washed away due to flash floods recently putting life and property in peril.


Dhumal expressed his concern over the damages caused to Giu village due to flash floods which had changed the course of local river from its traditional channel to the centre of the village.

 

He said that he had recently visited the village and was impressed with its typical traditional architect and living style of the residents. He said that with a view to preserve the traditional architect and life style of the residents of Giu village the State Government had taken up the matter with the Government of India to allocate alternate forest land at Silche near Hurling village, where the entire village could be relocated safely.

 

He said that efforts were afoot to get the approval from appropriate authority early so that relocation process could be started. He said that relief had been provided to the flood affected families of the village by the local authorities. He said that channelization of the diverted course of the river was also being carried out to protect the village from further damage.

Prof. Dhumal said that unprecedented rains had also affected Rong Tong and Lingti Hydro Electric Projects adversely. He said that efforts were being made to clear the intake of debris accumulated due to the floods. He said that electricity and drinking water supplies had already been restored and roads were being maintained to ensure smooth plying of vehicular traffic to and fro the valley. He assured the deputation that all-out efforts would be made to rehabilitate the villagers at safe location on priority.

 

 

Earlier, a deputation of District Kinnaur headed by Tejwant Negi, MLA, called on Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister, to thank him for getting Tejwant Negi nominated as State President of BJP ST Morcha.

The Chief Minister congratulated Tejwant Negi for taking over the rein of the ST Morcha of the party in the State. He said that Shri Negi would help in implementing all the policies and programmes of the State Government formulated for the speedy socio-economic upliftment of the tribal people of the State.

He said that the State Government had a separate department looking after the developmental requirements of the tribal people and earmarked funds were being provided annually for concentrated development of the tribal areas. He hoped that  Negi would look after the interests of the tribal people in the right perspective and maintain a close liaison with the State Government as well so that effective steps could be initiated to deliver relief to the tribal people of the State.

 

 

A deputation of Theog-Kumarsain area led by Sandeepani Bhardwaj and accompanied by Deevakar Sharma, President, Theog-Kumarsain BJP Mandal and Gyan Chandel, Chairman, APMC, Shimla and Kinnaur and other senior BJP leaders of the area also called on the  Chief Minister, and thanked him for nominating Shri Sandeepani Bhardwaj as Member of the National Council of BJP Kisan Morcha.

Deputation invited the Chief Minister to visit Theog during the third week of August to lay foundation-stones of various developmental projects and dedicate others to the public which had been completed.

Dhumal assured the deputation that he would be visiting the area soon not only to lay foundation-stones and dedicate the completed projects to the public but also listen to the grievances of the public which was on his priority agenda.
