Celebration of Deepavali in Jaina tradition

THE FESTIVAL of Deepavali has a very special significance in Jainism since Lord Mahavira, the last of the Jain Tirthankaras, attained salvation or Nirvana on this day at Pavapuri in Bihar in 527 BC on Chaturdashi of Kartika month. Also, the chief disciple of Mahavira, Ganadhara Gautam Swami attained complete knowledge or 'Kevalgyana' on this day.

Deepavali was first mentioned in Jain books as the date of the nirvana of Mahavira. In fact, the oldest reference to Deepavali is a related word 'dipalikaya' mentioned in Harivamsha-Purana written by Acharya Jinasena in the year 705 of Shaka Samvat era.

Adulterated honey being sold in India to meet growing demand

AN INTERESTING fact that has come to light during the discussions with various stakeholders is that in order to meet the growing demand for honey, companies are selling artificial honey having large sugar contents giving the end product a honey like flavour.

Sushant Mahapatra, Supreme court advocate and expert on drugs laws says that sugar contents of honey sold in our country should be examined from by leading labs like the Shriram Lab. A lot of cases have been brought into light where local honey sellers added sugar to honey and claimed that it was procured directly from the hive. Such activities are done at a large scale by various honey manufacturing companies.

The companies, many a times misguide the consumer by claiming that the packaged product is pure and is collected directly from the source like forests et al. As the demand for honey grows it may also be noticed that the companies are unable to satisfy the needs of the consumer as deforestation takes place on a large scale.

A study on effects of mobile phones and towers on honey bees has revealed that they emit electromagnetic waves that may wipe out honey bees. These waves interfere with the navigational skills of the worker bees and as a result they fail to reach their home destination.
