26th June 2010 - World Drugs Day
"A drug is neither moral or immoral - it's a chemical compound. The compound itself is not a menace to society until a human being treats it as if consumption bestowed a temporary licence to act like an a------" - By Frank Zappa (The Real Frank Zappa, 1989)

Public Distribution System needs major revamp, improvement
ALWAYS ON short rations Ram Das is sad. Babu at the fair price shop has asked him to collect his rations only next month when fresh supply is expected. Das was able to get a Red Card (a kind of below poverty line card) only after he sold his ‘Kali’ (goat) and stumped up Rs 200 to a local ‘netaji’. His Red Card contained few human errors and he was entitled to rations less than sufficient for his household. He tried to get them rectified but babus at SDO office wanted monetary oiling and as he could do none he had to helplessly put up with the perennial loss. Though he lives 25 km far from his office Ram Das has tried to get an audience with SDO saheb thrice. But on all occasions he was told SDO saheb was busy holding impromptu meetings. The ambitious Public Distribution System, later renamed Targeted Public Distribution System, has been marred by such carelessness, lack of vigilance, involvement of middlemen and the insensitiveness of concerned officials. Different sources claim that over 5000 Indians die of hunger every year. Despite considerable improvement in health post independence lack of substantial access to food has left almost 50 per cent children underweight and more than 70 per cent women with serious nutritional deficiencies. That, starvation deaths have become a national phenomenon and is a collective shame on the face of a civilised society the Supreme Court

Absurdity of Jharkhand and pain of being a Jharkhandi
MM JOSHI called it a ‘theatre of the absurd’ after attempts failed to rein-in Shibu Shoren- the flip-flop Chief Minister of Jharkhand. An array of seven chief ministers and two president’s rule in a history of 10 years is the fate of a state which is called Jharkhand. The drama which it has witnessed in the past ten years of its inception there is no apt expression then that of Joshi. A state which is the richest in minerals and natural resources is going nowhere. Making Ranchi look beautiful is not something which people are living for. Yellow flowers along with long eucalyptus are also not what people dreamt when the movement to make it a separate state ended! It had its political ambitions which the people

Neglected Innocence: Dreaming of a CHHOTU-free India
EVEN AFTER hectic planning, numerous welfare programmes, a series of legislative and administrative actions in the past five and a half decades, a huge chunk of Indian children continue to remain in distress and severe chaos. The ‘Indian childhood’ can be said to be one of the worst. This neglected chunk of ‘innocence’ is an epitome of malnourishment, illiteracy, trafficking, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The problem of child abuse and indifference is an increasing phenomenon but the sorry state of affairs is that even now the public and the government are not taking it seriously.
About 59 million out of 200 million children (6-14 years) in India are still out of school. 40% of the
